அருள்மிகு தென்னழகர் திருக்கோயில் திருநெல்வேலி மாவட்டம் பிரம்மதேசம் அருகில் உள்ள கோவில்குளம் என்னும் ஊரில் உள்ளது.

பெருமாள் மீது பக்தி கொண்டிருந்த மார்க்கண்டேய மகரிஷி, பூலோகத்தில் பல தலங்களில் பெருமாளை தரிசித்தார். அவர் பொதிகை மலைக்குச் சென்றபோது இவ்விடத்தில், சுவாமியை தரிசிக்க விரும்பி, பெருமாளை வேண்டினார். சுவாமி, அவருக்கு தாயார்களுடன் காட்சி தந்தார். பிற்காலத்தில் இப்பகுதியில் பெருமாள் பக்தர் ஒருவர் வசித்து வந்தார். மனதில் பெருமாளை எண்ணி வணங்கி வந்த அவருக்கு, சுவாமியை சிலாரூபமாக தரிசிக்க வேண்டுமென்று ஆசை உண்டானது. ஒருசமயம் அவரது கனவில் தோன்றிய பெருமாள், மதுரை அருகிலுள்ள கள்ளழகர் கோயில் மலையில் தான் சிலாரூபமாக இருப்பதாகவும், அச்சிலையை இத்தலத்தில் பிரதிஷ்டை செய்து வழிபடும்படியும் கூறினார். அதன்படி பக்தர் சிலையை கொண்டு வந்து இங்கு பிரதிஷ்டை செய்தார். பின்பு, மன்னர் ஒருவரால் இங்கு கோயில் எழுப்பப்பட்டது.

மதுரை கள்ளழகர் கோயிலில் இருந்து கொண்டு வரப்பட்ட மூர்த்தி என்பதால் இத்தல பெருமாள், "தென்னழகர்' என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறார். இவருக்கு, "ஸ்ரீபதிவிண்ணகர் பெருமான்' என்றும் பெயருண்டு.


முற்காலத்தில் கோயிலைச் சுற்றிலும் குளம் இருந்ததால் இப்பகுதி, "கோவில்குளம்' என்றழைக்கப்படுகிறது. முன்மண்டபத்தில் நாகர், விஷ்வக்ஷேனர், திருமங்கையாழ்வார், நம்மாழ்வார், உடையவர் ஆகியோர் இருக்கின்றனர்.

மூலஸ்தானத்தில் பெருமாள் காரை என்னும் கலவையால் செய்யப்பட்ட மூர்த்தியாக நின்ற கோலத்தில் காட்சியளிக்கிறார். முதலில் இங்கு பிரதிஷ்டை செய்யப்பட்ட விக்ரகம், காலப்போக்கில் சிதிலமடையவே இச்சிலையை பிரதிஷ்டை செய்திருக்கிறார்கள். எனவே இவருக்கு திருமஞ்சனம் செய்வதில்லை. சவுந்தரவல்லி, சுந்தரவல்லி தாயாருடன் காட்சி தரும் பெருமாளுக்கு அருகில் மார்க்கண்டேய மகரிஷி, வணங்கியபடி இருக்கிறார். கோயில் சுவற்றில் வடகிழக்கு மூலையில் மூலகருடாழ்வார் இருக்கிறார்.

சில ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு வரையில் இங்கு பூஜைகளும், திருவிழாக்களும் சிறப்பாக நடந்து வந்தது. தற்போது கோயில் சரியான பராமரிப்பில் இல்லாததால், விழாக்கள் எதுவும் நடைபெறுவதில்லை.

Sri Thennazhagar Temple

Sri Thennazhagar Temple, is in Kovilkulam near Brahmmadesam Tirunelveli district. Staunch Vishnu devotee Sage Markandeya was visiting many Vishnu shrines on earth. On his way to Pothigai Hills, responding to his prayer, Lord gave the sage His darshan with Mothers Soundaravalli and Sundaravalli.

There also lived here a staunch Vishnu devotee who wanted to have the darshan of Lord in idol form. Lord appeared in his dream and informed of His presence in idol form in Kallazhagar temple near Madurai. The devotee brought the idol and installed here. The temple was built later. As the Murthy-idol is brought from Madurai Kallazhagar temple, Lord is named as Thennazhagar – Azhagar of South. He is also praised as Sripathy Vinnagar Peruman.

Presiding deity Perumal in sanctum sanctorum is made of a lime mixture called Karai. He graces in a standing form. As the original idol was damaged due to age, this is made and installed again, hence Tirumanjanam is not offered to the idol. Sage Markandeya is in a worshipping for near Perumal gracing with Mothers Soundaravalli and Sundaravalli. Original Garudazhwar is on the temple wall on the northeast corner. Special Tirumanjanam is offered to Garudazhwar only on Swati star day in Aadi-July-August. He would be dressed with a shirt made of flowers. Special pujas are performed for 10 days to Lord following the Aadi Pooram festival.

As there was a tank around the temple earlier, the place is named Kovilkulam, Kovil-temple, kulam-tank. Sri Vishvaksenar, Nagar, Tirumangai Azhwar, Nammazhwar and Udayavar-Acharya Sri Ramanuja adore the front mandap. The temple was known for its festivals in earlier days. Due to lack of proper administration, no festival is celebrated in the temple these days.
