நமது நாட்டில் அதிக அளவில் உற்பத்தி செய்யப்பட்டு ஏற்றுமதியாகிவரும் மருந்துப் பயிர்களில் 'அவுரி' முக்கிய இடத்தைப் பெற்றுள்ளது.

இது தமிழ்நாட்டில் குறிப்பாகத் திருநெல்வேலி மாவட்டத்தில் அதிகம் விளைவதால் திருநெல்வேலி சென்னா என்றும் அழைக்கப்படுகிறது. தமிழ்நாட்டில் மதுரை, இராமநாதபுரம், விருதுநகர் ஆகிய மாவட்டங்களிலும், ஆந்திரா மாநிலத்தில் கடப்பா மாவட்டத்திலும், மஹாராஷ்டிர மாநிலத்தில் பூனாவிலும் அதிக அளவில் சாகுபடி செய்யப்பட்டு வருகிறது.

சர்வதேச இடத்திலும் 'திருநெல்வேலி சென்னா' ஒரு முக்கிய இடத்தை பெற்றுள்ளது என்றால் எத்துனை பெருமை நம் திருநெல்வேலிக்கு.

இந்த செடியின் இலைகளும் , பழங்களும் பல விதமான ஹெர்பல் மற்றும் இனிப்புப் பொருட்கள் தயாரிக்க உதவுகின்றன. சைனா,ஜப்பான், அமரிக்கா போன்ற நாடுகளில் இந்த இலைகளினால் தேநீர் தயாரித்து அதனை வரும்பிக் குடிக்கிறார்கள்.

வெளிநாட்டிற்குத்தான் இந்தச்செடியின் பாகங்கள் அதிகமாக நம் நாட்டில் இருந்து ஏற்றுமதி ஆகிறது என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

‘Tirunelveli Senna’ :

Avuri is one of the medical plant, which is commonly cultivated and imported from India in a large amount to other countries. This medical variety grown predominantly in Tiruneveli district of Tamil Nadu and has been popularly called as ‘Tirunelveli Senna’.

In India, this plant is also cultivated in the areas of Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Viruthunagar, kadappa and also in the pune district of maharastra.

The pods and leaves of the plants are used in confectionery and herbal preparations. It has been highly used as natural, safe time-tested laxatives in traditional as well as modern systems in the field of medicines.

It is also popular in western countries for making 'herbal tea'. Nearly 75 per cent of senna produced in India is exported to western countries.
