வள்ளியூர் , திருநெல்வேலி மாவட்டம் ராதாபுரத்தில் அமைந்துள்ளது. இந்த இடம் திருநெல்வேலி மற்றும் நாகர்கோவிலை இணைக்கின்றது, முருகனின் மனைவியாகிய வள்ளியின் பெயர் இவ்வூருக்குவழங்கபட்டுள்ளது .அழகான முருகன் கோவில் , வள்ளியூர் மலை, மற்றும் மேற்கு தொடர்சி மலையும் இவ்வூரை மிகவும் அழகுபடுத்துகிறது.

சுந்தர காண்டத்தில் குறிபிட்டுள்ள மகேந்திரகிரி மலை இந்த ஊரில் தான் அமைந்துள்ளது.இந்த மலையில் தான் முனிவர் பரசுராமர் தவத்தில் ஈடுபட்டார். வள்ளியூர் ஏரியே சீவலபேரி ஏரி என்று அழைக்கபடுகிறது. திருப்புகழில் அருணகிரிநாதர் வள்ளியூரை பற்றி எழுதியுள்ளார்.

1162-1173இல் வள்ளியூர் பாண்டிய ராஜனின் தலைநகரமாக விளங்கபட்டுள்ளது. வள்ளியூர் முருகன் கோவில் மிகவும் சிறப்புவாய்ந்தது. பூர்ணகிரி என்ற மலையை குடைந்து கட்டபட்டது. இக்-கோவில் ஓம் வடிவத்தில் அமைந்துள்ளது.

Valliyur:

Valliyur is a place located at Radhapuram taluk in Tirunelveli district. It interconnects two big cities Tirunelveli and Nagercoil.It gets its name from the goddess Valli, consort of Lord Murugan.The beautiful temple of lord muruga, the hills in Valliyur, and the wide Kuravan Malai(Western Ghats) gives the town a breathtaking scenic beauty.

Mahendragiri Hill which is mention in Sundara-Kandam is located on the west side of Valliyoor. Sage Parasurama did severe penance in this place. The Valliyoor lake is called as “Cheevalaperi lake”. Arunagirinathar has written about Valliyoor in Thirupukkazh”. Keezhakallur Mu. Azhvarapillai (1839-1925) has sung verses on Valliyoor.

During the period of 1162-1173 , Valliyoor was the capital of Pandiya Kings.It was believed that Valliyoor palace and fort were destroyed by invaders.In the entire Tirunelveli district, Valliyoor Murugan temple has a different feature. A rock named as Pooranagiri was excavated to build this temple. The temple shape is built in the form of “Om”.
